چکیده

We present results on mid-IR (5–16µm) spectral imaging of a sequence of interacting galaxies, observed by ISOCAM. The galaxies are part of the well known Toomre's " merger sequence " which was defined as a sample of galaxies depicting progressive snapshots in the time evolution of a merging event. To trace the intensity of the radiation field in a starburst, we use the ratio of the 15µm to 7µm flux. Our analysis indicates that this ratio increases as galaxies move from the pre-starburst to the starburst phase and goes again down to ∼ 1 in the post-starburst phase, a value typical of normal star forming regions in galactic disks. Moreover, we find that the variation of this ratio is well correlated with the one of the IRAS 25µm/12µm and 60µm/100µm flux ratios.

Molecular Gas in Optically Selected Mergers: Do All Mergers Undergo an Ultraluminous Phase?

We have mapped the 2.6 mm CO J = 1 → 0 emission in three optically selected “Toomre Sequence” mergers (NGC 520, NGC 3921, NGC 4676). We examine these data in order to address if there are any fundamental differences between these optically selected mergers and more luminous IR selected mergers. The molecular gas distributions are well resolved by the observations, and they are as compact as in ...

Molecular Gas in Optically Selected Mergers

We have mapped the 2.6 mm CO J = 1 → 0 emission in three optically selected “Toomre Sequence” mergers (NGC 520, NGC 3921, NGC 4676). The molecular gas distribution is well resolved by the observations. For NGC 520 and NGC 4676A, the nuclear gas concentrations form a diskor a ring-like structure, and the gas kinematics are regular and are consistent with simple rotation. Discrete molecular gas c...

Spitzer Imaging of nearby ULIRGs and their Progeny: Fine-Structure Elliptical Galaxies

We present results from two mid-infrared imaging programs of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) and fine-structure elliptical galaxies. The former are known to nearly all be recent mergers between two gas-rich spiral galaxies, while the latter are also believed to be even more aged merger remnants. An examination of these two classes of objects, which may represent different stages of the...

Spitzer Mid - Infrared Imaging of Nearby Ultraluminous Infrared

We have observed 14 nearby (z < 0.16) Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) with Spitzer at 3.6—24µm. The underlying host galaxies are well-detected, in addition to the luminous nuclear cores. While the spatial resolution of Spitzer is poor, the great sensitivity of the data reveals the underlying galaxy merger remnant, and provides the first look at off-nuclear mid-infrared activity. ULIRGs...

An infrared study of the double nucleus in NGC 3256

We present new resolved near and mid-IR imaging and N-band spectroscopy of the two nuclei in the merger system NGC3256, the most IR luminous galaxy in the nearby universe. The results from the SED fit to the data are consistent with previous estimates of the amount of obscuration towards the nuclei and the nuclear star formation rates. However, we also find substantial differences in the infrar...
